Two bald eagles tussle on the wing in the Chilkat Valley, Alaska.
In 1986, a research team visited the Chilkat to apply game theory principles to the bald eagles’ hunting strategies. While game theory is usually only used to describe humans, the scientists found that it could model the eagles’ behavior as well. Each eagle weighed risks and potential rewards when deciding whether to forage for its own food or steal from another bald eagle.
