The images in this gallery were all taken at the hours of sunrise and sunset. These “golden hours” are some of the best times to capture photos outdoors, as they lend a vivid, magical hue to every object. In our sunrise and sunset gallery, you’ll find lighthouses, waterfalls, majestic mountains, ancient buildings, the famous Delicate Arch, and much more. Bald Eagle And Child In Alaska“One day, son, all this will be yours.” A bald eagle and its fledgling roost on a branch in the Chilkat Valley, against the backdrop of a vivid Alaskan sunrise.
The child won’t get its crown of white feathers until it’s at least four years old. Once officially “bald,” it will live for an average of fifteen more years.

Portland Head Light With Breaking WavesThe Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth helps guide ships into this treacherous harbor. The breaking waves around the cape look blurry in this shot due to a slightly longer-than-normal exposure time on the Nikon camera used to capture this picture of a lighthouse.
The Portland Head Light is one of Maine's most iconic lighthouses, and was featured in the U.S. State Quarter program to represent Maine.
Another lighthouse can be seen in the distance, across the bay. This notorious, shallow water has no doubt been the grave of many an early mariner.

Snowy Delicate Arch At SunsetThough it is rare to have snow in Moab, after a big storm Delicate Arch stands covered in fresh powder. With the sunset in the backdrop, this monumental nature image shows the grandeur of Utah.
Winter at Arches National Park adds to the scene of this beautiful stone monument found there. At a towering 60 feet tall, this natural freestanding arch has a 46 foot high, 32 foot wide opening for light.
This landmark formed over millions of years by weathering and erosion is also called "Cowboy's Chap's," "Old Maid's Bloomers," and "Salt Wash Arch." Actually, this delicately slender arch is made mainly of porous Entrada Sandstone. The colorful reds of the stone is from the iron oxide levels in the rock strata.

The Bass Harbor Head lighthouse was built in 1858. The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is made out of brick and is colloquially known as the Bar Harbor Lighthouse. Like almost all lighthouses today, the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is now automated.

Sunset Over Turf Roofed Church In IcelandPhotograph of a sunset over the Hof Church in Iceland. Dating back to 1884, Hof is the newest turf-roofed church in the country, and the only one to still have an active congregation.
Turf buildings provided Icelanders with an early form of heating. The church is sunk partly into the ground and covered with earth and grass, insulating it from the cold on both sides.

Bald Eagle Flying In Front Of Amazing Orange SunriseThis sunrise provided the perfect backdrop to capture this majestic bird soaring through the air. This photograph has an almost impossible, ethereal quality to it. The hazy orange background was created through a combination of morning fog and the high latitude in Alaska, along with a subtle depth-of-field effect applied by the photographer.
This bald eagle picture gives the illusion of an eagle flying in front of a wildfire. We were very lucky to capture this unique picture of a bald eagle in flight. The background differentiates this shot from all other eagle in-flights that we have taken.

Breathtaking Ice BeachJökulsárlón is translated as glacial river lagoon. It is a glacial lake in Southeast Iceland. It developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

Christ Image With Setting SunThe Orange of sunset is a very powerful color when you take the time to watch the sun slip under the horizon. I was fortunate this evening to watch the sky glow under the monument to Christ on South Padre Island. To generate the magnified glow I used my 400mm wildlife lens to compress the image and the sky.

Denali Mountain With ReflectionIt is rare that Denali is out for viewing as only 30% of visitors to Denali National Park see the mountain. After many attempts, I was fortunate enough to not only see it on a clear day, but to capture a perfect refection of the "Great One" as the sun painted it orange. The reflection pond near the end of the park road serves as a perfect location to capture not one but two images of the magnificent peak.

Cape Meares Light At SunsetThe Cape Meares Light on the Oregon coast with the sunset and Pacific Ocean in the background. Originally called Cape Lookout by Captain John Meares, this name was mistakenly given to another cape nearby. Years later, to avoid confusion, this was renamed after the Captain himself.
It is actually the Shortest Lighthouse in Oregon standing at 38 feet tall. Still, the light from this shortest lighthouse could be seen up to 21 nautical miles out to sea. This amazing architecture has been maintained and is now part of the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint.

Sunset At Cathedral Peaks In AlaskaCathedral Mountain rises over the Chilkat River near Haines, Alaska. At sunset, the sun’s rays shone over the mountain, creating this beautiful scene.
It’s not clear where the name of the mountain comes from, but it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that an early explorer saw this same sunset and thought of the light through a cathedral’s stained glass.

White Rim Of The Green River Canyonlands National Park UtahOnly a few living species can survive in the harsh environment on top of the mesa's of Canyonlands National Park in eastern Utah.
