Curious bear cub testing the water

This curious bear cub tests the water in the Chilkoot River in Alaska. The young cub is too small to swim or fish, and so must stay on (relatively) firm ground.

The collar of silver fur around this bear’s neck indicates that it is still quite young. That coloring will disappear as the bear grows older.

This curious bear is checking out the temperature of the water. While we were taking pictures, he dipped his paws in the water several times, and even almost fell off his log. You can see the wet fur on the front paws in this photo.
