Costa Rican bird photo of Volcano hummingbird feeding on purple flowers. Also called the Rose-throated Flamebearer, this avian species only lives in the highlands of Costa Rica and Chiriqui, Panama. Weighing less than an ounce, and measuring about 3 inches in length, allows this bird to lay on flowers as it feeds. Seen here in this bird photo fluttering its wings while it softly rests on a purple blossom ladened plant, these avians prefer brightly colored, sweet scented flowers. Using their straw-like tongues they sip nectar upwards of 13 times per second.
