Green Aurora Curtain in Northern Alaska

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occur when charged particles from the Sun strike gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The color of the aurora depends on which type of gas the particles hit.

Green, the most common northern lights color, comes from ions striking oxygen 60 miles up in the sky.
