King Vulture in Northern Costa Rica

The king vulture is the biggest vulture in Costa Rica, and the second largest in the Americas. Its wingspan can measure up to 32 inches.

In this photo, you can clearly see that the king vulture’s head has no feathers, which helps keep them clean while eating carrion. The lack of feathers prevents this vulture’s food from sticking to its face, potentially infecting it with bacteria.
