Three Marine Iguana in the Galapagos

Our Galapagos photo workshop participants often find themselves mere feet away from scenes like this one, where three marine iguanas sun themselves.

They have a remarkable ability to thrive in a harsh environment. While they’re adapted to forage for food in the shallow waters, cold-blooded iguana can only swim for so long before they have to bask in the sun to warm up.

Not far from these marine marvels, the land iguanas present a contrasting scene. More colorful and often found amidst the arid landscapes of the islands, land iguanas offer a fascinating glimpse into the adaptability of life in the Galapagos. Unlike their marine counterparts, these terrestrial reptiles have a different survival strategy—they feast on the abundant cactus found on the islands.
