Nazca booby parents raise their young in a ring of guano, similar to other boobies. The smell of the guano helps them make sure they’re going home to the right chicks, since it can be hard to tell them apart.
This photo was taken on Genovesa Island, at the cliffside known as Prince Philip’s Steps. This coastline was named after Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who visited the Galápagos Islands in 1965 and 1981.
